October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Liberty Military Housing is proudly participating in its annual Think Pink campaign to join the efforts to raise awareness by sharing life-saving information and supporting those impacted by breast cancer.
The Importance of Awareness
Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers in women worldwide. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. While this is a significant statistic with early detection, the five-year survival rate is 99%.
Breast cancer develops when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming tumors that can potentially spread to other areas of the body. Though it primarily affects women, breast cancer can also occur in men.
Additionally, studies have shown that women in the military are more commonly diagnosed with breast cancer than civilians. Liberty recognizes the impact that breast cancer has on its military families and is dedicated to sharing this important message.
Recognizing the Signs and Taking Action
Understanding the signs and symptoms of breast cancer is a key component of early detection and treatment. Some common symptoms include:
Changes in breast size, shape, or appearance
Lumps, cysts, or thickened tissue in the breast or underarm
Ongoing tenderness or pain in the breast
Nipple changes or unusual discharge
While these symptoms do not automatically indicate cancer, they should be noted and evaluated by a medical professional.
Preventative measures like regular self-examination, consistent medical screenings, and open conversations with healthcare providers about risks and concerns.
