An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) enables employees to own part or all of a company they work for. Employees accumulate shares in retirement accounts over time, and then they cash in those shares when they retire or leave. Owning stock does not cost an employee any money. Lincoln Military Housing transitioned to Liberty Military Housing in December 2020, marking its evolution into the first employee-owned military housing provider in the United States.

The change was driven by a desire to preserve the company’s 20-year legacy of service to military families while empowering employees through ownership. By adopting an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), Liberty gave its team members a vested interest in the company’s future, thereby strengthening its culture, enhancing service, and reinforcing its mission to support military families with high-quality housing and compassionate care.

It’s easy to say that ESOP-owned companies are more profitable, but what do actual results show?

As you accumulate seniority at Liberty, you acquire an increasing right to the shares in your account. This process is called vesting. In our ESOP plan, eligible Team Members are vested after six years.
