"It changed everything... it set me up for surgery and I had the surgery done... knowing that while I was off [recovering] at home, my bills were being taken care of.”

While attending an emergency maintenance call one evening in the Patuxent River, Maryland community, Maintenance Technician II, Roger McDonald, realized his vision was preventing him from serving the residents in his community. Unable to see the home numbers, Roger knew he needed to get help. After a consultation with his eye doctor, it was determined that urgent surgery was needed to give Roger his sight back. While sharing with Clare Zdziebko, District Manager at Patuxent River, Roger explained the financial worry that this surgery would place on his family. Not only would Roger need to pay out of pocket for his surgery, but he would also need time off from work to recover from the procedure.

Described as an asset to the district team and its residents, Clare knew that Roger needed this procedure to continue supporting the community and his family. After a discussion about the Giving Liberty Charity Fund, Clare helped Roger complete the application for assistance. Funded solely by donations from Liberty team members, Giving Liberty has given more than $250,000 to employee-owners in need, providing essential support to their colleagues during the most difficult times in their lives.

The surgery was successful, and Roger is back at work proudly serving the residents and the Liberty team. "After this eye surgery, you know, people say open your eyes and, you know, look ahead. Well, now I can do that. I can actually look to see where my future's going to be. And it's going to be with Liberty,” Roger said.
